In situ high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry

Employing in situ high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry, a total number of 70 outdoor and 20 indoor representative measurements were performed in preselected, frequented locations of the main urban areas of Cyprus. From the measured in situ gamma-ray spectra, specific activities and gamma absorbed dose rates in air due to the naturally occurring radionuclides of 232Th and 238U series, and  40K are determined. Outdoor measurements were taken near public buildings (hospitals, schools, civil services, etc), pavements of main city roads and frequented national parks and gardens. The duration of each measurement was 1h, resulting in a statistical accuracy of the measured photopeaks of interest of about 5-10%.
